PHORIA SAVING US A RIOT

Phoria have been growing in stature and building a considerable fan base since they emerged with the totally immersive "Red" a couple of years ago now, and early releases were married with remarkable audio/visual live experiences at suitably atmospheric venues such as St. Pancras Old Church. This latest cut - the second look at their debut album Volition to be released 3 June via X Novo - is their most affecting to date: stripping away the deep textures we've come to expect from them, "Saving Us A Riot" relies on a stunning, hushed falsetto which whispers with haunting ease above intricately picking guitar. Layers of gorgeous strings bring warmth to the otherwise, chilling, wintery Carrie And Lowell-esque outing. Phoria, who play London's Pickle Factory on Wednesday 24 February, are responsible for the most beautiful riot you're likely to hear. - G.O'B
